Yesterday I missed my streak of tracking my habits.
My highest at the moment is 6 days of tracking.
James Clear talked about that being a challenge and proposed allowing systems that already track your habits automatically to do so.
I believe that is true 100% and you should.
I also believe you should make a conscious and aggressive effort to track your habits, at least in the beginning.
This makes you more aware, and in the beginning of transforming an aspect of your life you need a lot of awareness.
So this is my challenge.
Focus on tracking 1 habit for 100 days straight.
Keep in mind, I am not saying do 1 habit 100 days in a row.
I am saying track a habit.
Example: if your goal is to jog every day for 10 minutes.
Even if you miss a day, track it as a missed day.
Once you have established that habit of tracking, you can start packing on more habits and know that you will still track them to a large extent.
Because I have noticed with new habits, that's usually the first thing that gets me.
I forget I am tracking the habit, so I even forget about the habit quietly.
So the first habit I recommend tracking is the habit of tracking how you spend your time.
You can use a notebook or an app, I recommend Toggl or Gleoo time tracker.
The goal will be to track at least 4–6 hours of your day.
Why this habit?
When you track how you spend your time, you realize there are a lot of things in your day you can remove, and others you can add to help you get to your goal faster and simpler.
Why 4 hours?
I am assuming you are sleeping 6–8 hours in a 24-hour period.
That leaves you with 14–16 hours.
Aiming to track all those hours can feel very stressful and most people give up.
So aim to track the first 2 hours of the day and the last 2 hours.
You can also choose to track a specific activity that usually lasts 4 hours or you aim to do it in 4 hours.
This simple challenge will teach you about:
-
Setting reminders
-
Respecting your reminders
-
Becoming more aware of how you spend your time.
These are all fundamental to building habits that help you become the best version of yourself.
These are the first steps to building a system that increases the likelihood of you achieving your most meaningful goals in life.
So I am taking the challenge myself.
From today, 9th July 2025, 10AM, I am going to aim to track at least 4 hours of my day.
I am working on a new service in my marketing agency and I believe if I can dedicate 4 hours of uninterrupted planned time on this service, I can get it to where I want it to be.
Alrighty!
Until the next one.
This is Eli.
Oh by the way, I’m starting a newsletter soon. I’m not 100% sure what I’ll be talking about in it, but it’s definitely going to be about how I’m working on becoming the best version of myself and the lessons I’m learning along the way.
